Dataset Licence
Last updated: May 2026
This Dataset Licence forms part of the Fractune Terms & Conditions and governs how you may use the public Fractune dataset of architectural fluency readings. For legal details and additional rights and obligations, please also read our full Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy.
What the Dataset Contains
The Fractune public dataset (the "Dataset") consists of:
- Reading metrics, for each contributed analysis: the composite Architectural Fluency F, the four dimension sub-scores (F_fractal, F_rhythm, F_chromatic, F_structure), confidence, fractal dimension D, lacunarity Λ, edge-orientation entropy Hθ, curvature ratio κ, value contrast Δ_L, visual balance B, hierarchical scaling Σ_h, solid/void ratio V, spectral slope β, rhythm strengths Rh/Rv, fenestration regularity Rw, harmony type, and quality / perspective status.
- Optional location and orientation, latitude, longitude, camera heading, and pitch, when the contributor enabled location sharing for the reading.
- Optional building metadata, name, address, architect, style, type, construction year, and a metadata source tag, when the contributor enriched the reading.
- Optional face-redacted thumbnail, when the contributor consented to image donation. Faces are detected and blurred on the contributor's device before upload.
- Anonymous contributor ID, a randomly generated UUID. It cannot be reversed to identify a person.
- Timestamps and app/model versions, for scientific reproducibility.
The Dataset is browsable at sites.fractune.dk. A public read-only API is not currently offered; researchers who need programmatic access can request it under Research Partnerships below.
Licence Grant
Subject to your continuous compliance with this Dataset Licence and the Terms & Conditions, you are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and use the Dataset for the permitted purposes described below. No ownership of the Dataset, the underlying readings, or the derived metrics is transferred to you.
Permitted Uses
- Academic and scientific research: using the Dataset in research projects, peer-reviewed publications, theses, and academic conference work, provided proper attribution is given (see below).
- Education and personal study: exploring the Dataset to study fractal geometry, perceptual aesthetics, architectural composition, and related fields. Citing individual readings in coursework or lectures is permitted.
- Architectural and urban planning analysis: using the Dataset to inform design decisions, comparative studies of neighbourhoods or eras, and built-environment assessments, including for client work, provided you do not redistribute the Dataset itself.
- Journalism and public-interest reporting: referencing or visualising readings in news articles, reports, and public-interest publications, with attribution.
Attribution
When publishing research, analysis, visualisations, or reports based on data from the Fractune Dataset, you must credit the source as "Fractune (fractune.dk)" and, where applicable, cite the Dataset with a link to sites.fractune.dk. For academic citation, use the format on the Research page.
Restrictions
- You may not sell, sublicense, distribute, or offer the Dataset (or any substantial subset) as a standalone product or as part of a collection, template, or design resource, whether for commercial or non-commercial use.
- You may not upload, publish, or otherwise submit the Dataset to data marketplaces, AI training repositories, or competing architectural-analysis services.
- You may not reverse-engineer, parse, scrape, stockpile, or otherwise bulk-download the Dataset for the purpose of creating competitive products or services. Browsing sites.fractune.dk is permitted for individual lookups, not bulk export.
- You may not use the Dataset, or any output of the Fractune analysis pipeline, to train, refine, or generate artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning models without prior written permission from Fractune.
- You may not use the Dataset to attempt to identify, de-anonymise, contact, or profile individual contributors. The contributor ID is a randomly generated UUID and any attempt to link it to a real person, through cross-referencing with other datasets, metadata fingerprinting, or otherwise, is a serious breach of this Licence.
- You may not use the Dataset in any way that infringes upon the copyrights, trademarks, or intellectual property rights of Fractune, Colours by Barslund, or any third party (including the building owners, architects, or photographers depicted in or associated with contributed readings).
- You may not redistribute the Dataset on a stand-alone basis or as a compilation, either free or paid.
- You may not use the Dataset for any unlawful, defamatory, or offensive purposes, including using readings to make negative claims about the people who live in, own, or designed depicted buildings.
When using the Dataset, you must also comply with any applicable third-party terms of agreement, including platform-specific policies for services integrated into your work (Apple MapKit JS, CloudKit).
Research Partnerships
Academic institutions and research groups may request extended access to the Dataset for scientific purposes. Extended access can include bulk data exports, custom queries, and early access to new data fields. To discuss a research partnership, contact research@fractune.dk with a short description of your project, your institutional affiliation, and the data fields you require.
No Warranty
The Dataset is provided "as is" and without any warranties of accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. F values, D values, and the dimension sub-scores are mathematical approximations derived from photographs contributed by users, and may vary depending on lighting, camera angle, perspective skew, and image resolution. You assume all risk associated with the use of the Dataset.
Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Fractune and Colours by Barslund are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses arising from your use of the Dataset, including but not limited to loss of profits, data, business opportunities, or goodwill.
Termination
This Dataset Licence will terminate automatically if you breach its terms or the Terms & Conditions. Upon termination, you must cease all use of the Dataset and destroy any copies in your possession, including derived datasets you have built from it. Fractune may suspend or restrict access and block contributor IDs to protect our services, users, and licensors.
